KU Engineering Dean Donates KRW 100 Million for New Research Building

Korea University announced on September 15 that Gilsoo Jang, Dean of Korea University College of Engineering, donated KRW 100 million toward the construction of a new research building at the university’s Main Building in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, on September 14. The donation is intended to draw attention to the shortage of research infrastructure at engineering colleges at private universities and serve as a catalyst for greater investment in engineering education and research from various sectors of society.
“National competitiveness depends on engineering, and the achievements of engineering colleges are directly linked to financial support,” said Dean Jang. “The shortage of research infrastructure at engineering colleges at private universities has become a very serious issue.”
He continued, “Just as the Industry-University-Research Complex, or Techno Complex, provided a foundation for a major leap forward three decades ago, support from various sectors through an investment committee for Korea University College of Engineering is urgently needed. Investment in Korea University College of Engineering will be repaid through the creation of new value for the nation’s future.”
Dean Jang also explained the motivation behind his donation, saying, “As a member of the Class of 1986, marking the 40th anniversary of my admission this year, this donation represents both my gratitude to the university that provided the foundation for my growth and a small investment in its future.”
Building on the donation, Korea University plans to construct a new research building with a total floor area of approximately 3,000 pyeong on its Science and Engineering Campus. The university aims to secure state-of-the-art research equipment and experimental facilities, promote the development of next-generation convergence technologies spanning multiple disciplines, and further strengthen its research competitiveness at the global level.
“Having a faculty member make a personal donation to the university where he currently serves is both highly meaningful and rare,” said Korea University President Dong-One Kim. “We will honor his generous contribution by thoroughly preparing for the construction of the new research building so that Korea University can further establish itself as a world-class research hub.”
Dean Jang graduated from the Korea University School of Electrical Engineering and earned his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in the United States. He has served as a professor at Korea University since 2000. A leading expert in the field of power systems in Korea, he currently serves as a full member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, Chair of the CIGRE Korean National Committee, and Chair of the Power Engineering Division of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.
